Today is my turn to be called to the bar and my Long Call speech as follow:-

If it pleases My Lady, it gives me great honour to introduce the Petitioner, TAN LAI YEE.

My Lady,

The Petitioner who hails from Kuala Lumpur is the eldest child of 3 children born to Mr. Tan Teck Wee and Madam Ho Hong Ling, who are present in court today. The Petitioner received her primary education at SJK(C) Naam Kheung and her secondary education at SMK Cochrane. She later read law at Brickfields Asia College and completed her degree under the UK Degree Transfer Programme at the University of Aberystwyth graduating in 2012 with a First Class Honours.

Upon her return to Kuala Lumpur, she obtained her Certificate in Legal Practice in 2013 under a full scholarship awarded by Brickfields Asia College. Thus, she came to law and commenced pupilage under the guidance of my learned friend, Ms. Goh Siu Lin of Messrs. Shook Lin & Bok. The Petitioner has had a fruitful and challenging pupillage period with Messrs Shook Lin and Bok.

Spikes and thorns laid this path, tears and sweats must be shed to come this far, yet she does not retract and still enjoys the journey ahead. The reason being that the Petitioner just loves law. And today this union would unleash her to wield the sword of justice, for those who are in need and to shield those who are being persecuted. Today is symbolic and she is thrilled at the prospect of a career in law, drawing her inspiration from Steve Jobs:

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

On this special day, the Petitioner would like to express her gratitude to the people who have been her pillars of strength and source of encouragement throughout the years.

First of all, the Petitioner would like to honour her parents whom have nurtured her with unconditional love and guidance. She acknowledges that her dream of having an overseas education had made financial dents to their pockets. She is grateful for their financial sacrifice and their confidence in her abilities which enabled her today to release her dreams of being a lawyer. Their faith had reinforced her will to excel in all her endeavours. She would like to express her love to her younger siblings - Tan Lai Joo and Tan Keng Yi, she is appreciative of their support and understanding especially during her preparations for the Certificate of Legal Practice examinations.

The Petitioner would like to record her utmost appreciation to her pupil master, Ms. Goh Siu Lin for her patience and her willingness to share her thoughts and advice. The Petitioner also wishes to thank her seniors at Shook Lin & Bok, Mr. Dang Pek Chuan, Mr. Lim Wei Lih and Ms. Bong Ying Wei for their friendship, patience, guidance and encouragement during her pupilage.

To the Petitioner’s fellow pupils in Shook Lin & Bok, especially, Ms. Yong Jin San, a huge thank you for keeping the Petitioner sane when things got tough in the office. The Petitioner will always cherish the memorable times at work and leisure, including the good times during the futsal practices and tournament with all the SLB pupils.

The Petitioner would like to extend her gratitude to a very special person, Mr. Yeoh Choun Jin, who shares her every moment of ups and down, joy and victory. At the same time, she also wishes to thank all her close friends, Ms. Chuah Xiao Fen, Ms. Phin Han Yin, Mr. Teo Kui Cheng, Ms. Ng Zhi Ying, Mr. Chia Swee Ann and those who have graced this occasion with their presence as well as those who are unable to be present here today. The Petitioner feels truly blessed to be surrounded by such true friends and thanks them for their friendship and support all these years.

Last but not least, the Petitioner would like to thank her mover, Mr. Siva Kumar Kanagasabai for taking off time from his busy schedule to move her call.

Today marks the beginning of another journey of the Petitioner, she will strive to be a good lawyer, who serves justice and those in need and is guided by the words of the iconic Mahatma Gandhi “Be the change you want to see in this world”.

My Lady,

I verily believe that all cause papers are in order and that Petitioner is a fit and proper person to be admitted and enrolled as an Advocate & Solicitor. I also believe that my learned friends representing the relevant parties have no objections to this Petition.

Therefore, I pray that the Petitioner, Tan Lai Yee be admitted and enrolled as an Advocate & Solicitors at the High Court of Malaya.

Much obliged, My Lady.
